Kartverket

Kartverket, the Norwegian Mapping Authority, is a government agency in Norway responsible for geospatial information and official map products. It operates under the Ministry of Local Government and Modernisation and coordinates national efforts in surveying, mapping, and place-based data.

Its core responsibilities include maintaining topographic maps and the national geodetic reference system, developing and maintaining the country’s geospatial infrastructure, and administering Matrikkelen, the official cadastre and property register. Kartverket also manages the national address database and produces maritime charts and other official map products. It provides geospatial data and services to public authorities, businesses, researchers, and citizens.

The agency supports public planning, land use and infrastructure development, environmental monitoring, emergency preparedness, and navigation by supplying reliable geographic information. It promotes data accessibility and offers digital services, open data, and web-based map services to enable integration and reuse of geospatial data.

Kartverket participates in international cooperation on geodesy, mapping standards, and data exchange, and aligns with European and global frameworks such as INSPIRE. It operates nationwide with offices across Norway and is led by a director general.
