Kartonkipussi

Kartonkipussi is a packaging format used in Finland and other Nordic countries, typically described as a pouch or bag made from carton-based material with a laminated inner barrier. It is designed to hold a variety of dry goods and consumer products, and aims to combine printability and lightness with adequate protection for contents.

Construction and materials

A kartonkipussi usually consists of a front and back panel formed from paperboard or laminated carton, often with an inner barrier layer such as plastic film or metalized foil to provide moisture and oxygen protection. The outer surface is printed for branding and product information. Depending on the design, the pouch can have gussets to create a stand-up shape, a resealable closure, a tear notch, and sometimes a window to display the contents. The inner liner helps maintain product integrity while the outer layer offers visual appeal.

Applications

Kartonkipussi is used for a range of products, including coffee, tea, cookies and snacks, cereals, dried fruits, spices, confectionery, and sometimes pet food or cosmetics. The format supports on-shelf visibility and can be tailored with features such as resealability, dispensing openings, or product-specific barrier requirements.

The format is produced on form-fill-seal or pouch-making equipment, combining printed laminates, cutting, folding, and sealing processes. Recyclability varies with material choices: single-material paperboard designs are more easily recyclable, while multi-material laminates can complicate recycling. Environmental considerations are increasingly important in material selection and end-of-life options.
