Karhes

Karhes is a town and municipality in the fictional country of Veridia, located in the Northerntal region. It sits along the Karhe River, about 25 kilometers northeast of the regional capital. The municipality covers roughly 62 square kilometers and has a population in the low thousands. The name Karhes is believed to derive from the ancient Karh language, meaning river crossing.

Geographically, Karhes lies in a temperate lowland valley with rolling farmland and patches of deciduous forest. The Karhe River provides irrigation for agriculture and historically powered small mills. The area experiences mild summers and cold winters, with precipitation distributed fairly evenly through the year.

Karhes has medieval origins, with the first written records dating to the 13th century. It grew as a river crossing town that served nearby farms and trading routes. In the 19th century it gained formal municipal status and later underwent modernization in the mid-20th century, integrating regional infrastructure while preserving several historical buildings.

The local economy centers on agriculture—primarily grain and dairy—along with small-scale manufacturing and services. Tourism is modest but growing, driven by the river setting, the historic church, and riverside trails. The community emphasizes sustainable development and local crafts.

Demographically, the population is predominantly Veridian-speaking, with a small minority speaking the historic Karh dialect. The religious landscape is largely secular, with several churches and chapels serving cultural and ceremonial needs.

Karhes is governed by a mayor–council system. As of 2023, the mayor is Elin Voss. The town is served by regional roads and a daytime bus network linking it to the regional capital; there is no passenger rail station in Karhes.
