Karbonyyliliittymät

Karbonyyliliittymät, or carbonyl compounds in English, are organic molecules characterized by the presence of a carbonyl group. A carbonyl group consists of a carbon atom double-bonded to an oxygen atom (C=O). This functional group is central to a vast array of organic chemistry and is found in many important classes of compounds.

Aldehydes and ketones are two of the most common types of carbonyl compounds. In aldehydes, the carbonyl carbon is bonded to at least one hydrogen atom, while in ketones, the carbonyl carbon is bonded to two other carbon atoms. Carboxylic acids and their derivatives, such as esters, amides, and acid halides, also contain the carbonyl group, albeit with additional atoms attached to the carbonyl carbon.

The polarity of the carbon-oxygen double bond makes the carbonyl carbon electrophilic, meaning it is susceptible to attack by nucleophiles (electron-rich species). This reactivity is the basis for many important organic reactions, including nucleophilic addition reactions, which are fundamental to synthesizing more complex molecules. The carbonyl group's presence influences the physical properties of compounds, such as boiling points and solubility, due to its polarity and potential for hydrogen bonding in certain derivatives.
