Karakteritunnistus, often translated as character recognition, refers to the process of identifying and interpreting characters from images, scanned documents, or handwritten text. This technology plays a crucial role in digitizing information and automating various tasks that were once manual. The most common form of character recognition is Optical Character Recognition (OCR), which is specifically designed to detect characters in images of typed or printed text.

The process typically involves several stages. First, an image of the text is preprocessed to enhance its quality, often involving noise reduction and binarization. Then, segmentation techniques are applied to separate individual characters or words from the background. Following segmentation, feature extraction identifies unique characteristics of each character, such as curves, lines, and loops. Beyond OCR, character recognition can also encompass Handwritten Character Recognition (HCR), which deals with the more complex variations in human handwriting.
