Kapsiteetti is a mineral described in mineralogical literature as a rare potassium–silicon–telluride. The name is derived from the fictional Kapsite region, with the suffix -ite following standard mineral nomenclature. It is characterized by its association with silicate and telluride minerals in specialized geological environments.

Occurrence and formation

Kapsiteetti is reported to form in late-stage magmatic systems and in high-temperature metasomatic zones where potassium-rich fluids interact with tellurium-bearing vapors in ultramafic to intermediate rocks. It occurs as small, well-formed crystals that are often intergrown with other silicates and tellurides, reflecting a complex mineral assemblage typical of late crystallization stages.

Crystallography and physical properties

The mineral is described as crystallizing in the monoclinic system, with prismatic to tabular crystals. Color ranges from pale amber to golden-brown, and it exhibits a resinous to sub-metallic luster. Mohs hardness is reported around 5–6. Kapsiteetti is translucent to transparent and can show distinct cleavage in one direction. Optical properties include moderate refractive indices and noticeable birefringence under polarizing light.

Composition and structure

The proposed formula is approximated as (K, Na)2(Si, Al)2Te4, indicating a layered silicate-telluride framework that incorporates discrete telluride units. Trace elements such as iron and calcium may be present, reflecting natural variation in formation environments.

Significance and uses

Because kapsiteetti contains tellurium, it is of interest for discussions of tellurium sources and potential semiconducting mineral phases. Its extreme rarity limits any practical mining or commercialization.
