Kapillaaroskoopiat

Kapillaaroskoopiat, also known as capillaroscopy, is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure used to examine the microcirculation of the skin, particularly the capillaries in the nailfolds and other accessible areas. This technique involves using a specialized microscope called a capillaroscope to visualize the small blood vessels, providing valuable information about vascular health and function.

The procedure is commonly employed in the diagnosis and monitoring of connective tissue diseases, such as scleroderma (systemic sclerosis), systemic lupus erythematosus, and dermatomyositis. Abnormal capillary patterns—such as enlarged, tortuous, or destroyed capillaries—can indicate disease activity or progression. Additionally, capillaroscopy can help differentiate between different autoimmune diseases and assess the severity of microvascular involvement.

During the examination, the affected region, often the nailfolds of the fingers, is cleaned and sometimes cooled to optimize visualization. The capillaroscope captures magnified images of the capillary loops, which are then analyzed for features like density, shape, size, and blood flow. The procedure is quick, painless, and requires minimal preparation.
