The term is commonly described as deriving from an ancestral language, with kanu- meaning “law” and the suffix -nen denoting codification or authority.

The scope of Kanunen typically includes property rights, marriage and inheritance, dispute resolution, and ritual obligations that bind individuals to the community. It is often depicted as existing in both written scrolls and oral transmission, with regional variations that still reflect a shared core philosophy: respect for elders, consensus where possible, and proportional responses to harms. Institutions associated with Kanunen usually feature a council of elders or a designated judge who interprets the code, mediation as a preferred method for resolving disputes, and a system of customary enforcement that relies on social influence, reputational costs, and, in some depictions, formal penalties such as restitution, fines, or temporary exclusion from communal activities.
