Kantjämnhet

Kantjämnhet is a term used in Swedish technical contexts to describe the uniformity of an edge along its length. It denotes how flat and even the edge is relative to a reference plane and to the intended edge profile. In practice, kantjämnhet concerns the consistency of edge height and straightness along the edge line, which matters for parts that must meet flush, seal, or be visually uniform.

Measurement of kantjämnhet can be performed with various instruments depending on the required precision. Methods range from rough checks with straightedges and feeler gauges to more advanced techniques using coordinate measuring machines, laser or optical edge profilers, profile projectors, or 3D scanners. Results are typically expressed as the maximum deviation from an ideal edge line or plane, often presented as a profilogram or a tolerance value per length.

Factors that influence kantjämnhet include the cutting method and tool condition (for example, saw blades, routers, or milling bits), workpiece support and clamping which can cause deflections, thermal distortion during processing, and subsequent finishing operations such as planing, grinding, or sanding. Handling damage and edge treatments (beveling, chamfering) also affect the final edge quality. Achieving good kantjämnhet usually requires careful process planning, stable fixturing, proper tool maintenance, and controlled finishing steps.

Kantjämnhet is particularly important in applications where edges must mate closely, form seals, or present a uniform appearance. It is considered alongside related tolerances such as edge straightness and overall flatness, and is routinely evaluated in quality control across woodworking, metal fabrication, glass and plastics manufacturing, and related industries.
