Kansilevy

Kansilevy is a Finnish noun that literally means cover plate (kansi meaning cover and levy meaning plate or board). In everyday Finnish it denotes a physical plate or panel that covers, protects, or finishes an opening or component. The term is used across several industries, including furniture and interior fittings, electrical and mechanical engineering, construction, and packaging.

Common forms include metal mounting plates, plastic or composite decorative panels, and wood-faced covers. Dimensions and tolerances depend on the corresponding opening or flange; kansilevy may be produced by stamping, milling, injection molding, or laser cutting, followed by finishing such as painting, powder coating, anodizing, or veneering.

In retail and consumer packaging, kansilevy can refer to a decorative or protective outer panel that bears branding or instructions. In electronics and appliance assembly, it functions as a removable or fixed cover for safety and access. It is distinct from the terms kansi (lid or cap) and kansikuva (cover image), and in music terminology, the album cover is typically called kansikuva or kansi, while kansilevy is rarely used.

Historically, the term appears in Finnish technical literature since at least the early 20th century, with usage that broadened as manufacturing practices evolved. In modern use, the word is largely descriptive and context-dependent, and readers rely on accompanying adjectives to convey material, purpose, and fit.
