Kangasvärjäys

Kangasvärjäys, also known as textile dyeing, is the process of imparting color to textile materials like fibers, yarns, and fabrics using dyes. This ancient craft has been practiced for millennia, with evidence found in various ancient civilizations. The goal of kangasvärjäys is to achieve a specific hue and often to enhance the aesthetic appeal and marketability of the textile.

The process typically involves several steps. First, the textile material is prepared, which may include cleaning and scouring to remove impurities. Then, the material is immersed in a dye bath, which is a solution or suspension containing the coloring agent. The dye molecules then migrate from the bath to the textile fibers, forming a bond that fixes the color. Mordants, which are substances that help to fix the dye to the fiber, are often used to improve colorfastness and vibrancy, especially with natural dyes. After dyeing, the textile is rinsed to remove excess dye and then dried.

Dyes can be derived from natural sources, such as plants (e.g., indigo, madder, weld) and insects (e.g., cochineal), or they can be synthetic chemicals.
