Kandali

Kandali is a traditional artisanal process originating from the Indian subcontinent, primarily associated with the region of Punjab. It refers to the method of dyeing or printing fabrics, often cotton or silk, using natural dyes derived from plants, minerals, and even insects. The term "kandali" itself can refer to the process, the dyed fabric, or the block or stencil used in the printing.

The techniques employed in kandali are diverse and can include resist dyeing, where parts of the fabric are covered to prevent dye penetration, and direct printing using carved wooden blocks or stencils. Common natural dye sources include indigo for blues, madder root for reds, turmeric for yellows, and pomegranate rind for browns. The creation of intricate patterns and motifs is a hallmark of kandali. These designs often hold cultural and symbolic significance, depicting floral elements, animals, or geometric shapes.

Kandali dyeing and printing are often labor-intensive processes, requiring skilled artisans to prepare the dyes, treat the fabric, and meticulously apply the colors and patterns. The resulting fabrics are valued for their unique, often earthy tones and the artisanal quality that distinguishes them from mass-produced textiles. While modern printing techniques have become more prevalent, traditional kandali methods are still practiced by some communities, preserving a rich textile heritage.
