Kanalikoodimist refers to a method of encoding information within television broadcast signals. This technique allows for the transmission of additional data alongside the main video and audio streams. Historically, it has been used for various purposes, including teletext services, electronic program guides (EPG), and closed captioning for the hearing impaired.

The concept involves embedding digital data into specific lines of the video signal, typically during the vertical blanking interval (VBI). This part of the signal is not normally displayed on the screen and is thus available for carrying auxiliary information. Different types of data can be multiplexed into the VBI, each with its own format and protocol.

Teletext, for instance, used this method to transmit text-based information, such as news headlines, weather forecasts, and subtitles, which viewers could access by pressing a specific button on their remote control. Electronic program guides also leverage channel coding to provide viewers with schedules and details about upcoming programs. Closed captioning, a crucial accessibility feature, utilizes channel coding to transmit text overlays for dialogue and sound effects.

While advancements in digital broadcasting and streaming have led to alternative methods for transmitting such data, channel coding played a significant role in the evolution of television broadcasting and remains relevant in certain contexts. The specific implementation and capabilities of channel coding vary depending on the broadcast standards and the capabilities of the receiving equipment.
