KamnikSavinja

The Kamnik–Savinja Alps, or Kamniško–Savinjskih Alpe in Slovene, are a mountain range in northern Slovenia. They form a natural link between the Kamnik area in the west and the Savinja River valley in the east and are part of the Southern Limestone Alps. The range is known for rugged limestone peaks, glacially carved valleys, and extensive alpine and subalpine habitats.

Geographically, the Kamnik–Savinja Alps include a number of prominent summits. The highest peak is Grintovec, which rises to over 2,500 meters. Other well-known peaks include Skuta, Planjava, and Brana. The landscape features deep valleys, karst phenomena, and picturesque alpine pastures. Notable valleys and plateaus include Logar Valley (Logarska dolina), a protected landscape known for its scenic beauty, and the Velika Planina plateau, famous for its traditional shepherd huts and summer grazing.

Ecology and climate in the range reflect typical alpine and subalpine zones. Lower elevations are covered by beech and mixed forests, transitioning to coniferous forests and alpine meadows at higher altitudes. The fauna includes species adapted to mountainous habitats, such as chamois and ibex, along with a variety of birds and smaller mammals. The climate is alpine with cold winters and short, cool summers; snow cover is common at higher elevations.

Conservation and recreation are central to the region. Protected areas include Logarska dolina Landscape Park, while Velika Planina and surrounding areas attract hikers, climbers, and winter travelers. The range is accessible from towns such as Kamnik and Celje, with well-marked trails, mountain huts, and connections to regional road and rail networks.
