It refers to surgical procedures performed on or around the diaphragm, the muscular sheet separating the chest cavity from the abdominal cavity, or to address fluid accumulation in the pleural space (kalvontila), the area between the lungs and the chest wall.

These procedures can encompass a range of interventions. For instance, surgery on the diaphragm might be necessary to repair a diaphragmatic hernia, a condition where abdominal organs protrude into the chest cavity through an opening in the diaphragm. It could also involve procedures to reconstruct the diaphragm following trauma or disease.

When addressing kalvoväleiköissä related to pleural effusion, the surgery aims to remove excess fluid from the pleural space. This fluid buildup, known as pleural effusion, can be caused by various underlying conditions such as infections, heart failure, or cancer.
