Kalsiumsulfater

Kalsiumsulfater is the Norwegian term for calcium sulfate. Calcium sulfate is a chemical compound with the formula CaSO4. It is a white, crystalline solid that is sparingly soluble in water. In its anhydrous form, it is known as the mineral anhydrite, and as the dihydrate, it is known as the mineral gypsum.

Calcium sulfate occurs naturally in many parts of the world. Gypsum is a common sedimentary rock and is mined extensively. Anhydrite is less common but is also found in evaporite deposits. The compound can be synthesized through various chemical processes as well.

Industrially, calcium sulfate has numerous applications. Gypsum is a primary component in the production of plaster of Paris, which is used in construction materials like drywall (plasterboard), as well as for casting and sculpting. It is also used as a soil conditioner to improve soil structure and provide calcium and sulfur nutrients for plants. In the food industry, it is used as a coagulant in tofu production and as a firming agent in canned vegetables. It can also be found as a supplement in calcium and vitamin D pills.

Anhydrite, while less commonly used than gypsum, can be used as a desiccant due to its affinity for water. It is also used in the production of sulfuric acid and cement. Both forms of calcium sulfate are generally considered safe for their intended uses.
