In English, the adjective calorimetric is used to describe techniques, instruments, and analyses that quantify heat transfer or enthalpy changes. The term is commonly encountered in chemistry, biochemistry, materials science, and food science contexts.

Calorimetric measurements rely on the conservation of energy and the exchange of heat with a surrounding device called a calorimeter. Key quantities include the heat of reaction (enthalpy change, ΔH) and heat capacity (Cp). Calorimeters are calibrated with known references, often using water as a medium, so that observed temperature changes can be translated into energy values. Common calorimetric techniques include bomb calorimetry, used to determine the energy content of fuels and foods; differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), which measures heat flow associated with transitions such as melting or crystallization; isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), which evaluates binding interactions in biochemistry; and microcalorimetry, which detects very small heat changes in biochemical reactions or cellular processes. Together, these methods provide data on reaction energetics, phase behavior, material stability, and binding thermodynamics.

Applications span nutrition labeling, energy balance studies, polymer and material development, pharmaceutical formulation, and fundamental biochemical research. Limitations of calorimetric methods include potential heat losses, sample preparation effects, and the need for careful calibration and interpretation of complex heat signals.
