Kallatus

Kallatus is a genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae. It is described as native to the Mediterranean region and adjacent arid zones, with several species adapted to rocky soils and coastal habitats. The name combines Greek kallos, meaning beauty, with the Latin suffix -atus, reflecting the genus’s characteristic showy inflorescences.

The genus comprises at least two described species, including Kallatus luteus and Kallatus maritimus. Kallatus luteus is a hardy perennial with upright stems up to about 40 cm tall, lanceolate leaves, and capitula of bright yellow ray florets surrounding central disk florets. Kallatus maritimus is a coastal species with broader leaves and tolerance to saline conditions; its inflorescences resemble those of K. luteus but with somewhat paler yellow petals.

Description and ecology: Plants are herbaceous perennials or subshrubs, with alternately arranged leaves that are often rough to the touch. Inflorescences are heads (capitula) typical of Asteraceae, consisting of involucral bracts and a mix of ray and disk florets. They typically bloom in spring to early summer, and are visited by bees and other pollinators. In their native range, they contribute to the diversity of Mediterranean flora and often grow in open, sunny sites with well-drained soil.

Taxonomy and history: Kallatus was first described in botanical literature by Elena Ravelli in 1987. It is placed in the tribe Heliantheae within Asteraceae. Some treatments have debated its circumscription, but current usage generally recognizes the genus and its two described species.

Conservation: Habitat loss and disturbance in parts of the region threaten local populations, though some populations occur within protected areas.
