Kalkkilaastia

Kalkkilaastia, also known as calcined lime, is a chemical compound produced by heating limestone (calcium carbonate) to high temperatures, typically around 900-1000 degrees Celsius. This process, known as calcination, drives off carbon dioxide, leaving behind calcium oxide (CaO). The resulting product is a white, caustic, and alkaline powder that is highly reactive with water and carbon dioxide.

Kalkkilaastia is widely used in various industries due to its versatile properties. In construction, it is a key component in cement and mortar, where it reacts with water to form calcium hydroxide, contributing to the setting and hardening of these materials. It is also used in agriculture as a soil conditioner and fertilizer, as it can increase soil pH and improve nutrient availability. Additionally, kalkkilaastia is employed in water treatment processes to neutralize acidic waters and in the production of glass and ceramics.

The production of kalkkilaastia is an energy-intensive process, as it requires significant heat to drive off the carbon dioxide.
