Kalenderhistorikk refers to the historical development and evolution of calendars. Calendars are systematic methods for organizing days, weeks, months, and years, and their history is deeply intertwined with human civilization, astronomy, religion, and societal needs.

Early civilizations developed calendars based on observable celestial cycles, primarily the phases of the moon and the apparent movement of the sun. The lunar calendar, common in many ancient cultures, tracks the moon's cycles, typically comprising 12 lunar months. However, lunar calendars do not align perfectly with the solar year, leading to seasonal drift.

The solar calendar, which approximates the Earth's revolution around the sun, became crucial for agricultural societies needing to predict seasons for planting and harvesting. The ancient Egyptians, for example, developed a solar calendar that was remarkably accurate for its time.

Significant advancements in calendar-making occurred with the Roman calendar. Initially a lunar-based system, it underwent several reforms. The Julian calendar, introduced by Julius Caesar in 45 BCE, was a solar calendar with a leap year every four years, significantly improving accuracy.

However, the Julian calendar was still slightly too long, causing a gradual drift over centuries. This led to the Gregorian calendar reform, implemented in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII. The Gregorian calendar, which we use today, corrected the leap year rule, making it the most accurate solar calendar widely adopted. Its adoption was gradual across different regions and religions.
