Kaivamisen

Kaivaminen is the act of removing earth, soil, or rock from the ground. In Finnish, the word combines the verb kaivaa (to dig) with the possessive/gerund form -minen to mean the act or process of digging. In English, the equivalent terms are digging or excavation, depending on context.

Documentation includes mapping, section drawings, context records, artifact labeling, and metal detection when appropriate. Backfilling and restoration may follow digging work; disturbance is minimized in archaeological digs.
