Kahlan Amnell is a fictional character in the Sword of Truth series written by Terry Goodkind. She holds the title of Mother Confessor, serving as the political and spiritual leader of the Midlands, and is the bearer of the Confessor’s power to compel truth from others.

As the Midlands’ chief spiritual and political figure, Kahlan travels with the Seeker Richard Rahl to confront tyranny, protect the innocent, and lead in battles against the forces aligned with Darken Rahl and other threats. She is widely depicted as compassionate, morally resolute, and steadfast under pressure. Her relationship with Richard Rahl is a central element across the series, guiding decisions and shaping the arc of many events.

Her primary power is the Confessor’s ability to compel truth, a gift that must be used with great care due to its ethical implications and potential for harm. The Confessor can sense and reveal truth, sometimes influencing actions through the act of confession by touching a person. Kahlan appears throughout The Sword of Truth novels, from Wizard’s First Rule onward, driving major plotlines involving political intrigue, quests for artifacts, and the overarching struggle against tyranny. She also features in the television adaptation Legend of the Seeker, where the character is portrayed by Bridget Regan.
