Kabelstigar

Kabelstigar is a term used in Nordic languages to describe a fixed climbing aid system designed for traversing steep or exposed terrain. The word combines the elements for cable (kabel) and path or trail (stig), and the concept refers to routes in which a load-bearing cable is anchored to rock faces, cliffs, or other structures to provide handholds and, in some designs, foot supports.

A kabelstig typically comprises a steel or alloy cable anchored at multiple points, with attached components such as rungs, ladders, or footholds, and sometimes platforms or steps. In many implementations, hikers or climbers progress along the route by gripping the cable while placing their feet on rungs or supports, and they may use a personal protective system, such as a harness and lanyard, connected to an auxiliary safety line. The design emphasis is on enabling passage through vertical or near-vertical sections where conventional stairs or ladders are impractical.

Kabelstig routes are found in mountainous or rugged areas in Nordic regions and elsewhere where rock faces are encountered during trekking, mining, or forestry operations. They are related to other fixed-rope or via ferrata-style systems but tend to be less standardized and may vary in complexity, from simple handrails to more comprehensive stair-and-cable assemblies.
