The term draws on the Estonian word kaamera, meaning camera, with the -st suffix indicating origin or modality; in English-language discourse it has been adopted to signal a “from the camera” perspective.

Common features include extended takes, reflexive or self-aware framing, on-location shooting with natural light, and minimal expository narration; editors may reveal the construction of the image by including footage of the filming process or the crew at work, thereby inviting viewers to question the veracity of the depiction.

Kaamerast-style approaches emerged with the growth of portable video and social media, intersecting with observational cinema, cinéma vérité, and first-person documentary; practitioners include experimental filmmakers, ethnographers, and citizen journalists who seek immediacy and transparency in portraying events.
