KSHVHHV8, also known as Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) or human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), is a type of herpesvirus that infects humans. It is the causative agent of Kaposi's sarcoma, a cancer that forms soft, dark-purple or brown tumors on the skin or other organs. KSHV is also linked to other KSHV-associated conditions, including primary effusion lymphoma and Castleman disease.

The virus is transmitted primarily through saliva, and prolonged close contact is thought to be necessary for transmission. Sexual transmission is also a possible route. KSHV infection is more common in certain populations, such as men who have sex with men, individuals with weakened immune systems (like those with HIV/AIDS), and people in certain geographic regions, including parts of Africa, the Mediterranean, and the Middle East.

Once infected, KSHV typically remains dormant in the body for life. In individuals with healthy immune systems, the virus may not cause any symptoms. However, in immunocompromised individuals, the virus can reactivate and lead to the development of KSHV-associated diseases. Diagnosis of KSHV infection and related conditions often involves blood tests to detect antibodies to the virus or by examining tissue samples from the tumors. Treatment for KSHV-associated conditions depends on the specific disease and the patient's immune status, and may involve antiviral medications and treatments for the underlying cancer or lymphoma.
