Körhintalaulut

Körhintalaulut are a genre of Finnish folk songs traditionally sung during the Easter period. The name translates loosely to "Easter carriage songs" or "Easter journey songs." Historically, these songs were sung by young people, often girls, who would go from house to house in their villages, typically in groups, during Easter week. They would carry decorated branches or other symbolic items, hence the "carriage" or "journey" aspect.

The lyrical content of körhintalaulut often focused on themes of spring's arrival, fertility, and good wishes for the household they visited. They might include greetings, blessings for health and prosperity, and requests for Easter treats or small gifts. The melodies were generally simple and repetitive, easy to learn and sing in a group.

While the practice of going door-to-door singing körhintalaulut has largely diminished with modernization and changing social customs, the tradition holds a place in Finnish cultural heritage.
