Käyntitilanne is a Finnish term that translates to "idle state" or "idling" in English. It refers to the condition of a machine, engine, or system when it is running but not actively performing its primary function. This is commonly encountered in the context of internal combustion engines, where the engine is running but the vehicle is stationary.

In automotive applications, käyntitilanne means the engine is providing just enough power to keep itself running and maintain a stable idle speed, typically between 600 and 1000 revolutions per minute (RPM), depending on the vehicle and engine type. During idle, fuel consumption is minimized, but not eliminated, as some fuel is still required to overcome internal friction and power auxiliary systems like the alternator and air conditioning.

Beyond vehicles, the concept of käyntitilanne can apply to various mechanical or electronic systems. For example, a computer processor might enter a low-power idle state when not actively processing tasks, or a manufacturing robot might be in a käyntitilanne when waiting for its next instruction.
