Käivitusajamid, commonly referred to as starters, are essential components in internal combustion engine systems. Their primary function is to initiate the engine's rotation, enabling it to start running. This is typically achieved through an electric motor that engages with the engine's flywheel or flexplate. Once the engine achieves self-sustaining speed, the starter disengages.

The process begins when the ignition key is turned or a start button is pressed, sending an electrical current to the starter solenoid. The solenoid then extends a small gear, known as the pinion gear, which meshes with the teeth of the engine's flywheel. Simultaneously, the solenoid closes a circuit, directing a high current from the battery to the starter motor. The motor spins the pinion gear, which in turn rotates the flywheel and the engine's crankshaft. As the engine fires and begins to run under its own power, the pinion gear retracts, and the starter motor stops.

Starters are generally robust but can experience wear over time. Common issues include a worn pinion gear, a failing solenoid, or a motor that has lost its power. These problems can manifest as clicking sounds without engine cranking, slow cranking, or no cranking at all. Regular maintenance and prompt attention to any unusual sounds or performance can help prolong the life of a starter.
