Jääytimenäytteet, often translated as ice core samples, are cylindrical sections of ice extracted from glaciers or ice sheets. These samples are crucial for paleoclimatology, providing direct evidence of past atmospheric conditions and climate. The ice itself traps air bubbles, which preserve samples of ancient atmosphere, allowing scientists to analyze the composition of gases like carbon dioxide and methane from hundreds of thousands of years ago.

The process of collecting ice cores involves specialized drilling equipment that penetrates deep into the ice. As the drill advances, it extracts a continuous cylinder of ice. The depth of the core corresponds to the age of the ice, with the oldest ice found at the bottom of thick ice sheets. Once collected, these cores are carefully transported to laboratories for analysis.

Scientists examine various properties of the ice core. Beyond atmospheric gas composition, they analyze isotopic ratios of water molecules (oxygen and hydrogen), which can reveal past temperatures. The presence of dust particles, volcanic ash, and other impurities can indicate past environmental events like droughts, volcanic eruptions, and wind patterns. This multifaceted analysis allows researchers to reconstruct past climates with remarkable detail, helping to understand natural climate variability and the impact of human activities. The longest ice cores, such as those from Antarctica and Greenland, extend back over 800,000 years.
