Jäätymisasteesta, also known as the freezing point, refers to the temperature at which a liquid transitions into a solid state. For pure water at standard atmospheric pressure, this temperature is 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit). However, the freezing point of a substance can be influenced by various factors.

The presence of dissolved solutes, such as salts or sugars, generally lowers the freezing point of a liquid. This phenomenon is known as freezing point depression and is a colligative property, meaning it depends on the concentration of solute particles rather than their specific identity. For example, adding salt to water significantly reduces its freezing point, which is why salt is used to de-ice roads.

Pressure also has a minor effect on the freezing point. For most substances, an increase in pressure slightly raises the freezing point. However, water is an exception; its freezing point decreases with increasing pressure. This unusual behavior is due to the fact that solid water (ice) is less dense than liquid water.

The freezing point is a fundamental physical property and is crucial in various scientific and practical applications, including meteorology, chemistry, and food preservation. Understanding and controlling freezing points is essential for predicting weather patterns, designing chemical processes, and ensuring the safe storage of perishable goods.
