Jäätmekäitlemisel

Jäätmekäitlemisel, also known as ice fishing, is a traditional winter pastime in Estonia and other cold climates where frozen bodies of water allow for safe access. The activity involves creating a small hole in the ice to fish beneath it, typically targeting species such as perch, pike, or roach. This method has been practiced for centuries, serving both as a recreational sport and a means of subsistence during harsh winters.

The process begins by selecting a suitable location on a frozen lake or river, ensuring the ice is thick enough to support weight—generally at least 10–15 centimeters (4–6 inches) for safety. A hand auger or ice chisel is used to drill a hole, which is then cleared of ice shavings. Fishing lines, often equipped with small hooks and bait like worms or minnows, are lowered through the hole. Anglers may use a small platform or sled to sit comfortably while waiting for a bite.

Jäätmekäitlemisel is not only a way to catch fish but also a social and cultural experience. Many communities organize group outings, where participants share stories, food, and warmth by a fire or heated shelter. In Estonia, it is often associated with rural traditions and family gatherings, particularly during the winter months. The practice has also gained popularity as an eco-friendly alternative to conventional fishing, as it avoids disturbing aquatic ecosystems.

Modern adaptations include the use of heated cabins, electronic fish finders, and specialized gear, but traditional methods remain widely practiced. Safety precautions, such as wearing ice cleats and carrying an ice pick for self-rescue, are essential due to the risks of thin ice or sudden temperature drops. Despite its simplicity, jäätmekäitlemisel continues to be cherished as both a practical skill and a cherished winter tradition.
