Jääkaappijäädytys

Jääkaappijäädytys refers to the process of freezing food items within a refrigerator. This is distinct from a dedicated freezer compartment, although many modern refrigerators incorporate both. The primary purpose of freezing food is to preserve its quality and extend its shelf life by inhibiting the growth of microorganisms. When food is frozen, water within the food turns into ice crystals, significantly slowing down or stopping enzymatic and microbial activity.

The efficiency and effectiveness of jääkaappijäädytys depend on several factors. The temperature inside the refrigerator plays a crucial role; lower temperatures accelerate the freezing process. For optimal preservation, food should be frozen rapidly. This can be achieved by placing items in the coldest part of the refrigerator, typically the back or the bottom shelf, and ensuring there is adequate air circulation around them. Packaging also matters, as airtight containers or freezer bags help prevent freezer burn, which is dehydration of food due to ice crystal formation on its surface.
