Jäähdytyskondensaatio, often translated as cooling condensation, refers to the process where water vapor in the air turns into liquid water when it comes into contact with a surface that is colder than the dew point temperature. This phenomenon is common in everyday situations and has various practical applications and implications.

The fundamental principle behind cooling condensation is the change of state of water. When warm, moist air cools, its capacity to hold water vapor decreases. If the temperature drops below the dew point, the excess water vapor can no longer remain in gaseous form and condenses into liquid water droplets. This can occur on surfaces like cold windows during winter, on the outside of a cold drink glass in humid weather, or on pipes carrying cold fluids.

In buildings, cooling condensation can be a source of problems. For instance, condensation on walls or ceilings can lead to mold growth, material degradation, and reduced insulation effectiveness. Proper ventilation and insulation are crucial in preventing unwanted condensation. However, controlled cooling condensation is utilized in many technologies. Refrigeration systems and air conditioning units rely on condensation to remove heat and moisture from the air. In these systems, a refrigerant absorbs heat and evaporates, then is compressed and condensed back into a liquid, releasing the absorbed heat.

Understanding cooling condensation is important for optimizing building design, managing indoor air quality, and designing efficient cooling and dehumidification systems. The presence and management of this physical process play a significant role in both comfort and durability in various environments.
