Jäykkyysominaisuudet, known in English as stiffness properties, refer to the resistance of a material or structure to deformation under applied loads. This is a fundamental concept in engineering and material science, crucial for designing safe and functional objects and systems. The primary measure of stiffness is the Young's modulus (E), also known as the modulus of elasticity. This value quantifies the relationship between stress (force per unit area) and strain (relative deformation) in a material subjected to tensile or compressive forces. A higher Young's modulus indicates a stiffer material, meaning it will deform less under the same load.

Beyond Young's modulus, other stiffness properties are relevant depending on the type of deformation. The shear modulus (G) describes a material's resistance to shear deformation, where parallel layers slide past each other. The bulk modulus (K) relates to a material's resistance to uniform compression, i.e., its incompressibility. Poisson's ratio (ν) is also closely related, describing the tendency of a material to deform in directions perpendicular to the applied load.
