Jätteenpolttoja, also known as waste incineration, is a waste treatment process that involves the combustion of waste materials. This process occurs in specialized facilities called waste incineration plants or power plants. The primary goal of jätteenpolttoja is to reduce the volume of waste, recover energy from its combustion, and in some cases, neutralize hazardous components.

The incineration process typically involves controlled burning at high temperatures, often exceeding 850 degrees Celsius. This high temperature ensures the destruction of organic matter and reduces the waste volume significantly, sometimes by up to 90%. The heat generated during combustion can be harnessed to produce steam, which in turn drives turbines to generate electricity. This makes waste incineration a form of waste-to-energy recovery.

Modern jätteenpolttoja facilities are equipped with advanced pollution control systems to minimize the release of harmful substances into the atmosphere. These systems include filters to capture particulate matter, scrubbers to remove acidic gases like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, and systems to manage dioxins and furans. The ash residue produced from incineration is typically managed through landfilling or, in some cases, recycled for use in construction materials.
