Jätkavama

In discussions that touch on Estonian morphology, the form is sometimes mentioned as a hypothetical or border-case construction derived from the verb jätkama (to continue) by combining elements associated with the present participle (jätkav) and the infinitive suffix (-ama). Because it is not part of standard usage, its status and function remain uncertain and are mostly of interest to researchers examining verbal forms, nominalizations, or historical/dialectal variants.

Etymology and interpretation are tentative. The proposed construction would draw on the verb stem jätkav- (from jätkama) and the infinitive suffix -ama, yielding an expression that could be interpreted as a verbal noun meaning “the act of continuing” or as a participial-turned-nominal form. However, such an analysis is not widely documented, and there is no agreed-upon set of rules for its formation or its syntactic behavior.

In practice, if encountered, jätkavama is generally treated as a non-standard or theoretical discussion point rather than a productive part of Modern Estonian grammar. It may appear in historical texts, dialect research, or meta-linguistic commentary rather than as a living, regularly used form. Further scholarly work would be needed to establish a firmer definition or to determine its possible functional parallels in Estonian.
