A juurikäyttäjä, which translates to "root user" in English, is a special user account in Unix-like operating systems, including Linux and macOS, that possesses unrestricted access to the entire system. This account is often referred to as the superuser or administrator. The root user has the privilege to perform any operation, including reading, writing, and deleting any file or directory, installing and uninstalling software, modifying system configurations, and shutting down or restarting the system. This level of power is necessary for system administration tasks such as managing user accounts, performing system updates, and troubleshooting complex issues.

However, the immense power of the root user also carries significant risks. Mistakenly executing a command with root privileges can cause irreparable damage to the operating system, leading to data loss or system instability. Therefore, it is generally recommended to avoid operating as the root user for everyday tasks. Instead, users typically operate with standard user privileges and only elevate their privileges when necessary to perform specific administrative actions. This is often achieved through commands like sudo, which allows a permitted user to execute a command as another user, typically root, after providing their own password. This approach enhances system security by minimizing the window of opportunity for accidental or malicious damage.
