Juurihakemistot, often translated as root directories or simply roots, are a fundamental concept in computer file systems. They represent the topmost level of the directory hierarchy. Imagine a file system as an inverted tree; the root directory is the single point from which all other directories and files branch out. In many operating systems, this root directory is represented by a specific symbol. For Unix-like systems, such as Linux and macOS, the root directory is denoted by a forward slash (/). For Windows, the root of each drive is represented by a letter followed by a colon and a backslash, for example, C:\.

All files and directories within a file system are located either directly within the root directory or within subdirectories nested under the root. This hierarchical structure allows for logical organization and efficient management of data. When you access any file or folder on your computer, you are technically navigating through a path that starts from the root directory. Understanding the concept of the root directory is crucial for comprehending how file systems are organized and how data is accessed and stored.
