Juurepikkus

Juurepikkus is a term used in Finnish botany and horticulture to refer to the total length of a plant’s root system, including primary, secondary, and finer roots. It is a fundamental trait of root system architecture and is often considered alongside other root characteristics such as depth, mass, and root length density to describe how a plant explores soil for water and nutrients. Juurepikkus can be reported as the overall length of all roots, or as layer-specific lengths measured down to particular soil depths. Measurement methods vary and can be destructive or non-destructive.

Destructive methods involve excavating the plant, washing away soil, and directly measuring root lengths through scanning or using image analysis. Non-destructive approaches include minirhizotron imaging, which records root growth over time, and indirect estimates from soil cores or electrical methods that infer root length density. Each method has its own trade-offs in accuracy, practicality, and the ability to capture temporal changes.

Several factors influence juurepikkus, including species and genotype, developmental stage, soil texture and structure, moisture availability, nutrient supply, and competition with other plants. Generally, woody plants may develop deeper, longer root systems, while many herbaceous crops build dense networks of finer roots in upper soil layers. Juurepikkus is a key parameter in studies of drought tolerance, nutrient uptake efficiency, soil stabilization, and carbon dynamics.
