Juttoon

Juttoon is a term used in the fictional Archipelago of Ostrah to denote a cantilevered wooden platform that projects over the shoreline. Typically built on rocky coves or the fronts of coastal houses, juttoons are used for fishing, drying nets, and as sheltered spaces where residents handle gear and observe the sea. They are designed to resist wind and spray and are anchored by rock bolts, timber posts, and lashings.

Etymology and usage. The word juttoon derives from Ostrah terms for edge or projection (jut) and place or platform (toon). The form appears in maritime records dating back centuries and remains the common local term in coastal communities.

Construction and design. Juttoon's typical construction uses driftwood or salvaged timber for the cantilever beam, with lateral bracing and vertical posts tied by hemp or plant-fiber rope. Some variants include a railing, a small shelter, or a deck at the far end. Maintenance emphasizes rope replacement and timber treatment.
