Joonestus

Joonestus is the Estonian term for the act or result of creating a drawing. The word covers a broad range of image-making activities, from quick sketches and diagrams to finished illustrations. In everyday usage, joonestus can refer to both the process of drawing with traditional media and the generation of digital line-based imagery.

Etymology: The noun is derived from the verb joonestama (“to draw”), and is related to the noun joon, meaning line or stroke. The term is cognate with similar words in related Finnic languages, such as Finnish joonistus.

Applications and domains: In art education, joonestus is fundamental for developing representation and composition skills. In technical fields, joonestus denotes technical drawing and diagrammatic representation used in planning, architecture, engineering, and drafting. In contemporary design, vector drawings and CAD files are also described as joonestus when referring to the drawing output rather than the 3D model.

Techniques and materials: Traditional joonestus employs graphite pencils, ink, charcoal, or pen on paper; supports can range from simple notebook sheets to bristol board. In digital contexts, drawing tablets and software enable vector and bitmap line work that is still described as joonestus.
