Bristol is a city and unitary authority in the South West of England. It lies on the River Avon, at the northern edge of the Severn Estuary, and is the most populous urban area in the region outside London. The city dates to medieval times as a trading port and grew rapidly during the 17th to 19th centuries with its maritime and industrial activities. The arrival of the Great Western Railway linked Bristol to the national network and helped make it a leading port and manufacturing centre. The city is known for its maritime heritage, and landmarks such as the SS Great Britain, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and the Clifton Suspension Bridge across the Avon Gorge.

The economy is diverse, with strengths in aerospace and engineering, creative media, technology, and higher education.
