Johdoille

Johdoille is a rare silicate mineral notable for its pale blue-green phosphorescence under ultraviolet light. First described from the Narra Basin in the early 22nd century, it quickly gained interest among mineral collectors and researchers for its glow and unusual composition.

Etymology: The name Johdoille derives from the local Narri word for light-bearing stone, reflecting its luminescent properties. The term was adopted by the International Mineralogical Society in 2147.

Properties: Johdoille is a hydrated calcium aluminum silicate with trace rare-earth dopants such as europium and terbium, which produce its characteristic luminescence. It crystallizes in a hexagonal system, often forms elongated prisms, and has a vitreous luster. Typical hardness on Mohs scale is 6.5–7, with a specific gravity of about 3.4–3.7.

Occurrence and formation: It forms in hydrothermal veins within karst landscapes, usually in proximity to quartz and calcite. It is concentrated in vein pockets where silica-rich fluids interact with calcium-rich host rocks. The mineral is relatively scarce and occurs in limited deposits, making high-quality crystals rare.

Uses: Commercially, Johdoille is primarily valued as a gemstone and collector mineral due to its glow and color. It is also studied for potential use in phosphor materials and light-emitting devices. In some regional traditions, it is regarded as a symbol of illumination and knowledge.

Research and regulation: As a rare mineral, Johdoille extraction is tightly controlled, with supply chiefly from a few mining districts. Laboratories produce synthetic analogs for research and gemological testing.
