Jigsawryhmätyö is a cooperative learning technique designed to reduce prejudice and increase motivation by making students interdependent. The core principle is that each member of a small group becomes an expert on one part of a larger topic and then teaches that part to their groupmates. This process requires students to listen to each other, engage in discussions, and work collaboratively towards a common goal.

The typical jigsaw classroom involves dividing students into "home groups" of five to seven members. Each member is then assigned a specific section of the material to study. Students with the same assigned section from different home groups then convene in "expert groups" to discuss and master their assigned material. After becoming experts, they return to their home groups to teach their section to the other members. This structure ensures that each student has a vital role to play in the group's success, fostering a sense of responsibility and mutual reliance.
