Jigsawarbete refers to work carried out with a jigsaw, a handheld power saw used to cut curves and complex shapes in materials such as wood, plywood, plastics, and thin metals. In Swedish woodworking, the term describes both professional carpentry tasks and hobbyist projects that require irregular cuts.

Equipment and blades: A jigsaw consists of a motor, a blade mounted on a reciprocating mechanism, and a base plate. Blades vary by material and tooth pitch; wood blades have larger teeth, metal blades have finer teeth. Features such as variable speed, orbital action, and, on some models, pendulum action improve cutting performance. For curved lines, a guide or jig can help; for internal cuts, drill a starting hole and support the workpiece.

Techniques: Mark the cut line and, if possible, apply masking tape to reduce splintering. Cut slowly at first to establish the curve, then maintain a steady feed. Let the blade do the work and avoid forcing it; for tight bends, use a small-diameter blade or multiple shallow passes. Choose blade type appropriate to the material and avoid twisting the blade.

Materials and applications: Jigsawarbete is common in woodworking for cabinetry, pattern making, storefronts, and craft projects. It is also used with plastics and thin metals when heat buildup is controlled and blades rated for the material are used.

Safety: Always clamp the workpiece, wear eye protection, and consider hearing and dust protection. Keep hands away from the blade, ensure the base plate remains flat on the surface, and disconnect power when changing blades.
