JeanAndrés

JeanAndrés is a class of diesel-electric locomotives designed and built by GE Rail in the United States for Egyptian National Railways. The locomotives were part of a major upgrade program for Egypt's rail network, aiming to increase efficiency and capacity.

The JeanAndrés design is derived from the GE AC4400CW built in the United States, making it a dual-source approach for diesel and electric operation. Characteristics include a single diesel engine driving a generator for power supply to an electric traction motor, in addition to a separate bank of power electronic converters that allow it to operate using onboard stored power from 3 large IGBT converters. The electric traction motor, in turn, propels the locomotive's wheels.

The JeanAndrés series was one of several locomotive models adopted by Egyptian National Railways to meet ambitious renewal targets. Allocations have upgraded the range of frequently used lines, differentiating against competition from highways that favor continues in the growth of passenger movement by rail. Whether further production of the JeanAndrés model is an option and possible alternatives for expanding train-carrying capacity are subject to future upgrades, cost assessments and determining preferred stakeholders.
