Jarruperävaunut, a Finnish term, translates to "braked trailers." These are trailers equipped with a braking system, which is a significant safety feature compared to unbraked trailers. The braking system typically engages automatically when the towing vehicle decelerates, helping to slow down the trailer smoothly and safely. This is particularly important for heavier loads, as it prevents the trailer from pushing the towing vehicle or becoming unstable.

The most common type of braking system found on jarruperävaunut is the overrun brake, also known as a breakaway brake or inertia brake. This system uses a spring-loaded mechanism that is compressed when the trailer pushes against the towing vehicle during braking. This compression activates the trailer's brakes. Many jarruperävaunut also feature a breakaway cable, a safety measure that connects the trailer's brakes directly to the towing vehicle. If the trailer becomes detached, this cable pulls a lever, engaging the trailer brakes and bringing it to a stop.
