Jaotusliinidest

Jaotusliinidest is the Estonian term for partition or division lines used to delineate categories, zones, or regions on a map, chart, or diagram. The word combines jaotus (distribution, division) with liin (line), and the genitive plural form -idest reflects “of partition lines.” In practice, jaotusliinid appear in cartography, geographic information systems (GIS), statistics, and urban planning to mark boundaries between distinct classes or administrative areas.

In cartography and GIS, jaotusliinid describe the borders that separate data classes on a choropleth map, such as population density or income brackets. They are typically derived from a chosen classification scheme, for example equal-width intervals (dividing the data range into equal-sized bins) or equal-frequency intervals (bins containing roughly the same number of observations). These lines can be overlaid with other map elements and styled to communicate the classification clearly.

In statistics and data visualization, jaotusliinid help readers perceive how a continuous variable is grouped into discrete categories. They are different from isolines, which connect points of equal value, and from administrative boundaries, which define governance or jurisdiction rather than data classes.

In urban planning or regional analysis, jaotusliinid may denote zoning borders, service areas, or catchment regions, aiding planning decisions and the organization of public services.
