Jalgratastel

Jalgratastel is a traditional stringed instrument associated with the fictional Northmarka region. Classified as a lute-zither hybrid, it combines a rounded wooden body with a long fretted neck and four courses of strings. The instrument is noted for a bright, projecting tone that travels in ensembles and outdoors.

Construction and design: Jalgratastels typically use a spruce soundboard and walnut back and sides, with a shallow arched top, a carved bridge, and a detachable nut for easy string changes. Most models have a scale length around 55 cm and include optional sympathetic strings to enrich sustain and resonance.

Playing technique and repertoire: Players pluck or strum with a plectrum or fingers, often combining melody lines with drone accompaniment. Common tunings favor fourths or pentatonic scales. Traditional pieces emphasize vocal-led dances, storytelling ballads, and ceremonial tunes used in regional celebrations.

History and cultural context: The jalgratastel is traced to Northmarkan coastal communities in the 17th–18th centuries, where it served secular and ritual purposes. It saw revival in the 20th century through folk music programs and regional ensembles.

Modern variants and makers: Contemporary jalgratastels include electric pickups and synthetic materials; notable builders include Salen Workshop and Norda Factory, with instruments documented in ethnomusicology collections.
