Jämviktsläge

Jämviktsläge, often translated as equilibrium, is a state in a system where opposing influences are balanced, resulting in no net change over time. In physics and chemistry, this typically refers to a state where the rates of forward and reverse processes are equal. For example, in a reversible chemical reaction, chemical equilibrium is reached when the rate at which reactants form products is the same as the rate at which products decompose back into reactants. At this point, the concentrations of reactants and products remain constant, although the reactions continue to occur.

In mechanics, mechanical equilibrium exists when the net force and net torque acting on an object are zero, meaning the object is either at rest or moving with constant velocity. This is a state of balance where no acceleration occurs. Thermodynamics also describes equilibrium in terms of temperature, pressure, and chemical potential, where these intensive properties are uniform throughout a system and do not change over time.

The concept of equilibrium is fundamental across many scientific disciplines, indicating a stable or steady state that a system tends to achieve. It is important to note that equilibrium does not necessarily mean that nothing is happening within the system, but rather that the macroscopic properties of the system remain unchanged because the underlying processes are balanced.
